Future 'Southern' 24 Hours

Regretfully Esther has decided that it is not possible to find a viable 24 Hour course in Sussex, or indeed across into Kent. That means that there won't be another 'Southern' 24 Hour. Mind you we said that in 1999 so who knows!

Webmaster - 2015-08-01

Result Sheet

Esther is sending out printed copies of the result sheet to all riders (1 August 2014) and riders will have received an email with a link to the result sheet on the web site. If you would like a copy you can download either a booklet version here (printed double sided & short edge) or a continuous version here, which can be printed single or double sided.

We are grateful for everyones patience over the result. If we run the event again we promise to have something out quicker next time.

The 2014 event

Firstly thanks to everyone who rode and supported the ESCA 24 Hour event.

Jonathan Shubert (High Wycombe CC) is the 2014 RTTC National 24-Hour Champion with a provisional distance of 516 miles. 2012 Champion Ultan Coyle (Look Mum No Hands) and outsider Toby Hopper (Cardiff Ajax CC) with 501 and 498 miles respectively, although all the results are subject to official confirmation.

The battle for the Woman's Championship was between former champions Lynne Biddulph (Taylor) of Born To Bike and Marina Bloom (Rugby RC) both having won the title four times over the years. This time it was Biddulph who triumphed notching up 449 miles to Bloom's 410.

Lynne and Jill were matching each other almost to the second at the beginning. Jill got a few minutes ahead of Lynne who was a few minutes in front of Marina. The gap started to grow and Tim spoke to John at the Boship around midnight and Jill was about an hour up on Lynn (timed through the same checkpoint) but John thought Jill was only likely to do around 445 based on her times to the 12 hours (Tim spent quite a lot of time with sheets of paper and check cards and he still had absolutely no idea what distances anyone did!!). The "girls" looked very stylish and could give some of the blokes a lesson or two (or twenty).

Apparently Jill packed on the finishing circuit so will record a distance but did not complete 24 hours. It appears that Jill was hospitalised about three weeks ago after Land End to John o'Groats ride. Perhaps it is surprising that she lasted as long as she did. But we felt very sorry for everyone because we had quite a catalogue of disasters.

First off there was a burst water main at South Chailey so they had temporary traffic lights. they were not too bad because they were visible for probably half a mile or more and riders could time their arrival for the green light. Then there was a crash (three cars) just before the Little Horsted RAB as they came down the hill to finish the circuit. The road was partially blocked and the riders had a few problems getting through so the circuit was closed early and everyone moved down to the Broyle (or boil) circuit.

Things settled down until the night circuit when another burst main at the Cuckoo Trail crossing with another set of temporary lights - which were stuck on RED both ways -caused problems. The issue with the lights was eventually fixed.

It seemed to be two very hot days with noticeably colder night. Ultan turned up at his car for his jacket about 11 and his male helper was wearing it (to keep it warm for him!!!!!!!!!). Apparently the chap was asleep and Ultan had a fight getting it off him.

Mike Kilby has gone through a first set of results. The provisional result is on the ESCA 24 Hour web site and there have been a few queries. If anyone has any queries over their distances can they make sure they provide some evidence. Garmin track etc. If there is only a minor discrepancy (a mile or so) then this can be due to lots of reasons. The distance for each rider is calculated based on the course measurements.

Tim took this photo at North Chailey.

Help

This year the course will be completely in East Sussex, starting opposite Arlington reservoir and comprising three circuits linked by stretches of the A22.

Obviously we will need many helpers, and volunteers have been coming forward since this event was mooted. We will need more though and hope that you and your club mates will be able to assist for a few hours whilst cheering on your own club riders throughout the event.

Among the volunteers Robin Johnson is committed to putting out the signs and Max Norrell will be on call for any riders who have mechanical trouble. Jackie MacNay has promised to bring her massage table for after the event treatment and Gary Booth will supervise the signing-on. A form that can be downloaded here has a list of helpers that we will need. If you are able to come out will you be kind enough to mark the times you will be available and the sort of job you are able to do.

2014 Course Update

After various discussions the start of the course is likely to be moved to a lay by opposite Arlington Reservoir car park. This is about half a mile from the Event HQ, and about 2.6 miles from the previous start.

The course details have been amended to reflect this change.

The benefit is that the road is straight at this point and helpers will be abl to use the Arlington Reservoir car park opposite the start. The start is also within easy distance of the Event HQ at Berwick
